Talisker was established in 1830 despite disapproval from a local minister. It quickly established itself as a distinctive single malt and was proclaimed “The King o’ drinks as I conceive it.” by R.L. Stevenson, author of Treasure Island. Talisker produces a peaty, sweet, single malt with hints of salt.
A newspaper article of 1894 describes Talisker’s isolated position at the time as where only the “turf sheilings of the Highlanders” indicate man’s presence. Everything apart from barley and coal was floated in and out by chain ropes – a loading method believed to “be unique in the British Islands”. A sheiling was a very basic dwelling.
Talisker comes in various expressions but for 2020, there was a special release of a Talisker 8 year old which is finished in Carribbean rum barrels.
KT Tunstall is a Scottish pop/rock singer who enjoys a dram of Talisker. In recognition of this, the distillery gifted her a custom made guitar made from old Talisker whisky barrels!
